The Air & Space Museum was established in 1961 and is housed in the historic Ford Building in Balboa Park. Outside in front of the museum are actual aircraft - a Convair Seadart, Lockheed A-12, and SR 70 Blackbird.
The museum covers over 100,000 square feet so you want to be sure to get a copy of the Museum Visitor Guide. In 1 hour you just get an introductionof how extensive the museum is. It's recommended that you allow at least 2-3 hours to properly explore the museum plus additional time if you want to try out some of the interactive displays such as simulated flight.
The museum has sections including Milestones of Flight, Space, World War I, World War II, and Jet Age & Beyond. With over 90 full scale historic aircraft and replicas including a replica of the Spirit of St. Louis built in San Diego. San Diego has some of the richest aviation heritage of any city in the U.S. The Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park is definitely a "must see" in Balboa Park.
