Founded in 1903, Scripps is one of the oldest and most prestigious marine and earth sciences research institutions in the world. The Scripps mission is to seek, teach, and communicate scientific understanding of the oceans, atmosphere, Earth, and other planets for the benefit of society and the environment. Come learn more about this jewel of the University of California system; we invite you to join our 1-hour public tour offered the second Saturday of every month. Tours are free but registration is required. A map and tour details will be sent with confirmation of your registration.

Parking: Parking in Scripps lots is by permit only. You can purchase a permit at the pay-station in Lot P003. There is also free parking available on the street.

This walking tour focuses on the Presidio de San Diego, buried underground below the Serra Museum. Learn about the historical significance of this site going back deep in time, how the unique river and marine environment attracted people to the site since the beginning of time. Discover how archaeologists and historians have been able to understand what buildings and structures were there, and reconstruct what they may have looked like. Afterwards, browse around the new exhibition inside the Serra Museum. Our city is a canvas! On this walking tour we discuss the methods and history behind street art. Come marvel at ever-changing street art while learning concepts and context that transform how you see and experience cities everywhere.

We explore a two mile loop in San Diego’s thriving North Park neighborhood, and also stop in locally owned gallery spaces and shops to appreciate the wonderful work being done in our community.

Tours run one and a half to two hours, Wednesday through Sunday, starting at noon. Additional 2:30pm time slots available on Saturday and Sunday.

The Villa Montezuma is the Historic Jesse Shepard/”Francis Grierson” House.  It was built in 1887 as the home of world famous pianist, author, and Spiritualist Jesse Shepard. Jesse began a writing career in San Diego and took the pen name “Francis Grierson,” a name that he used in life as well as for his writing. The Villa is located in the Sherman Heights Historic District of downtown San Diego, CA, at the corner of 20th & K Streets.  The Sherman Heights Historic District is the largest historic district within San Diego; it has almost 400 contributing historic structures.

This 1-Hour walking tour of Hillcrest covers San Diego’s LGBTQ history with stories of some of its earliest gay bars, the hate crimes plaque, Harvey Milk Street, the Center, the Rainbow Flag and much more. The tour covers the people, places and events that made San Diego’s “gayborhood” the vibrant community it is today.

Learn about how and why the migration of gay bars from downtown began, how San Diego and Hillcrest attracted a large LGBTQ population, and how even the gay bars were once “closeted.”

Guided Docent Led Tours at the Maritime Museum of San Diego is your opportunity to learn of the ships in-depth stories from our trained knowledgeable historians, and enjoy the waterfront sights of San Diego Bay while meeting other people with like interests in maritime heritage and history.
